Back Translations

To maintain a uniform workflow, translation of electronic documents only (MS Office files, PDF, etc) from English and French into German.

I localize most projects using the translation memory software Trados, which is the market leading product in that category today. Using a translation memory (TM) tool, bits of text I translate for a particular project are automatically stored for re-use in the same project, which brings about very important benefits for you, and for me:

  • Most longer documents have a lot of internal repetitions – you don't have to pay for these, and more importantly, I will always translate these in the same way, as the TM software prompts me to re-use my earlier translation. In a similar way, this also applies to specific terms, since I can query earlier translations.
  • The translation memory tool strips away all formatting while I translate, then puts it back afterwards – the document I deliver to you will have exactly the same formatting as the one you gave me.
  • When your source document changes one day, the software is very precise in showing me which portions of the text have actually changed – I don't even have to look at the rest.
  • Using a TM tool does not mean that the software actually translates for me – it only provides useful suggestions based on my own translation. Most translators today will find this technology quite indispensable, even for small translation projects.
